Dental problems can cost you money and your health. Start preventing problems at home by practicing proper brushing and maintenance. With proper oral care, you can cut down on tooth decay and the chances of gum disease. Tooth decay and gum disease are the two most common dental problems, and thankfully, the easiest to avoid!
Many believe that brushing and flossing alone can keep your mouth healthy, but that is not always the case. Diet can also play a large factor in tooth decay, especially if you are not brushing right after every meal. Foods containing sugars and starches, such as breads, cereals, fruits, soda, or candy are bad for your teeth. When there are traces of sugar and starch in your mouth, the bacteria that live in your mouth feed on them, turning them into acids. The food debris, bacteria, their acids, and saliva combine to create plaque, which sticks to your teeth. The acids in plaque break down the enamel on your tooth’s surface, creating cavities.
The best way to prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease is to keep up on your oral health routine:
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. This helps brush away food debris, bacteria, and their acids. If you can brush after every meal, that is preferable.
Floss between your teeth daily to remove food and bacteria.
Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash daily.
Eat foods low in sugar and starches, especially foods that stick to your teeth. Sticky foods cling to your teeth, allowing bacteria to grow at the surface as long as the food remains.
Check with your dentist about adding sealants to the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Sealants are painless and help protect the areas of your teeth that come in contact with food the most.
Ask your dentist about a fluoride supplement to strengthen your teeth.
Visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist can see signs of decay that you may not. Regularly cleanings at your dentist will also reduce plaque and stains on your teeth.
While not all dental problems can be prevented, tooth decay and gum disease can. By keeping up on your oral health and preventing tooth decay and gum disease, you avoid extra dental costs to fix any problems that tooth decay or gum disease can cause.
